X-Box Deal The 3D Market A Right Hand

3d gaming basicsThe 3D industry has been given a bit of a back-hand today, with Microsoft’s X-Box guru Phil Spencer declaring that the time was not yet right for 3D gaming, in a move that may be considered by many to be a bit of a side-swipe at Microsoft rival Sony, who have declared that 3D gaming will be a big focus of their Playstation console in 2011.

The Xbox boss noted that ‘for better or for worse, people just don’t really have TV’s in their house right now that are going to do 3D in a way that’s going to work.’  This opinion from such a distinguished member of the gaming industry could end up causing a bit of a slide in sales, with essentially one half of the console industry being unwilling to commit to 3DTV.

However, Mr Spencer did note that whilst Xbox would not be fully commiting to 3D technology yet, that he had been very impressed with Nintendo’s recent revelation of it’s 3DS hand-held console.  Whilst Spencer noted that he enjoyed the 3DS – primarily because the console’s technology means that 3D glasses aren’t necessary – it’s worth observing that the 3DS has no direct competition against Microsoft, who currently do not offer a handheld console.

Spencer finally made an observation that Sony’s push for 3D in their console market could be as a result of them having to also push 3DTV sales across their group, something that Microsoft does not have to do, possessing no similar ‘corporate mandate.’

‘I don’t need to sell you a TV’, Mr Spencer noted, ‘Other companies may have that part of their business model.  I don’t.  A bunch of people sitting in a living room wearing $150 glasses – I’m just not sure that’s kind of mainstream today.’

Whatever happens in the future of the 3D gaming, it’ll  be interesting to see just how long X-Box will continue to really opt out for.
